Comfort foods and my Rema Ammai

June 10, 2017

When I think of comfort foods, the two things that come to my mind are the food that enriched my soul and the person who filled me with happiness cooking it.

At this moment, I think of Rema Ammai ( My dad's first cousin), I can only think of three words to describe her " Simple, humorous and a culinary Goddess in modern Kerala Cooking".....

Most of my conversations with Rema Ammai would always revolve around food...and we had a very common connections....If both Rema Ammai and I am upset, the best calming medicine would be Lime juice and Dosas...

Times have changed now...Today to visit someone, you need to take prior appointments..You cant just walk into someone's house and announce "I am hungry"... the exceptions can be counted in your fingers...

Not in Rema Ammai 's house..She always has a tub of Dosa Batter awaiting the unexpected visitor....

One of Sanjan's and my best memories with food outings always always had Rema Ammai. One day we happened to visit  in her Palarivattom Home. Rema Ammayi and  Hari Mama were going out with their children Deepthi and Achu. They invited us to tag along. The first stop was at Merchant Navy club in Wellington Island. To start with lime juice and Chilly chicken..Yum,...Followed by soft buttery Naan and the best Chicken mughlai with the waves from Mother Arabian Sea bobbing gently in the backgound and sea breeze breathing into our face,....It made mine and Sanjan's day.  We thought we were going home after that...but the night of surprises had just begun. The next stop was at Woody's Icecream Parlour in Warriam road at 10 pm...So sanjan and I assumed it was dessert time and then home....Again they surprised us...The next jolt was at Pai brother's Tattu kada opposite Padma  Theatre. This  dosa street affair ,is something which Kochiites shared an intense love for ...It was hot crispy masala dosa and omlette that too at 11:30 in the night...One of the best day of my life...

...Always proved time and again, spontaneous decisions are always etched as life's best moments.......

Rema Ammai is a wonderful teacher..infact teaches anything in a humourous way with logic attached...Living far away means less access to a lot of food found in homes like my great grandmothers delights and forgotten recipes... Each time I call her, she will always say " Eda chintukutta, I made this and this and thought you might enjoy this recipe like me..."

In one of my recent phone calls he said" Eda, make this and entice the street with aroma of the fish fry. "
